Lake Placid High School Winter Carnival king and queen to be chosen from field of 8 seniors

LAKE PLACID — Eight seniors have been chosen as the king and queen candidates for this year’s annual Lake Placid High School Winter Carnival, which will be held from Thursday, Jan. 30 to Saturday, Feb. 1.

Below is a list of the candidates and their bios.

Shannon Bentley

Shannon Bentley is the daughter of Joseph and Jacquelyn Bentley of Wilmington. Her family includes her brother Colin, their dog Whistler and cats Vinnie, Nigel and Simon.

Born in Plattsburgh, she attended Momot Elementary School in Plattsburgh and North Country School in Lake Placid.

Shannon competes in soccer, softball, NYSEF Freestyle and enjoys snowboarding at Whiteface, exploring the woods and spending time with her brother and friends. She is the senior class co-president and a member of the National Honor Society.

Her senior project is to design and build a living memorial garden to be located at the middle-high school.

After graduation, Shannon plans to pursue her interest in becoming a physician assistant at Russell Sage.

Alyssa Hoffman

Alyssa Hoffman is the daughter of Torry and Jessica Hoffman of Lake Placid. Her family includes her brother Spencer and dogs, Chloe, Lola and Sadie.

Born in Plattsburgh, she attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

Alyssa enjoys skiing, hiking, photography and playing the flute, as well as competing in softball. She is the senior class co-president, a member of the Student Council and an active member of the Environmental Club.

Her senior project highlights her interest in investigating the ways to decrease road salt impact on Mirror Lake.

After graduation, she plans to pursue her interest in the field of architecture. She has been accepted to Keene State College and has applications pending at Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Buffalo, New England Institute of Technology and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Sara McKillip

Sara McKillip is the daughter of David and Rebecca McKillip of Lake Placid. Her family includes her two sisters, Kaleigh and Kelsey, and Bean, the cat.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, she attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

Sara competes in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She enjoys baking, reading, writing, and theater in her free time. Sara is the senior class vice president, president of the National Honor Society, a member of the Student Council, a member of Women’s Ensemble and a member of Vacation Bible School.

For her senior project, Sara is working on creating a website to help support other kids who have been diagnosed with cancer.

After graduation, she plans to pursue her interest in environmental studies and English. Her college applications are pending.

Anya Morgan

Anya Morgan is the daughter of Todd and Heather Morgan of Upper Jay. Her family includes her parents and her dog Georgia.

Born in Saranac Lake, she attended Keene Central School for her elementary years.

Anya competes in cross country running and Nordic skiing. In her free time, she likes traveling, surfing, playing the ukulele and hiking. She is president of Environmental Club, secretary of National Honor Society and a Youth Climate Leader.

For her senior project, she will be presenting to other schools in the area about climate change in hopes of assisting them in starting their own environmental clubs and to attain their attendance at the next Youth Climate Summit.

After graduation, Anya plans to pursue her interest in environmental architecture and design. Her college applications are pending.

Gunnar Anthony

Gunnar Anthony is the son of Todd and Robin Anthony of Wilmington. His family includes his brother Parker and their dog Archer.

Born in Saranac Lake, he attended Lake Placid Elementary School. Gunnar competes in skiing, lacrosse and cross country running. He enjoys skiing, gaming, hunting, and computer engineering. Gunnar is a member of the Robolympians Robotics team and Science Olympiad Team.

His senior project highlights his interest in computer engineering. He is doing an internship with the school’s information technology staff.

After graduation, Gunnar plans to pursue his interest in computer technology as a nodal network specialist. He has enlisted in the United States Army.

James Flanigan

James Flanigan is the son of John and Alison Flanigan of Lake Placid. His family includes his sister, Lily and brother, Max.

Born in Warwick, he attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

James competes in cross country running, Nordic skiing, track and lacrosse and is a member of NYSEF. He enjoys collecting marbles and “making people happy.”

For his senior project, he is learning to quilt by making one with his mother.

James has applications pending at University at Albany, University of New Hampshire, St. Lawrence University and Montana State University.

Connor Reid

Connor Reid is the son of Elizabeth and the late Steven Reid of Lake Placid. His family includes his brothers, Tim and Nick and animals Koopa and Cody.

Born in Saranac Lake, he attended both St. Agnes and Lake Placid Elementary School.

Connor competes in soccer and lacrosse. He enjoys fixing up classic cars and helping at Dreadhead Soccer Camp.

His senior project is to assist in obtaining a score trailer and a new bounce back at the Jim Kordziel Athletic Fields.

After graduation, Connor plans to continue his interest in trades by either attending a trade school or doing an apprenticeship.

Michael Skutt

Michael Skutt is the son of Michael and Desiree Skutt of Lake Placid. His family includes his sister, Olivia, brother Sam and dogs, Ben, Maya and Freckles.

Born in Saranac Lake, he attended Lake Placid Elementary School.

Michael competes in cross country running, Nordic skiing, track and is also a member of NYSEF. He enjoys skiing, running and computer coding.

His senior project highlights his interest in computer technology. He is doing an internship with the school’s information technology staff.

After graduation, Michael plans to pursue his interest in computer science while attending St. Lawrence University.
