LP boys ski to Queensbury title

NORTH CREEK — James Flanigan finished first, and Kai Frantz placed second to lead the Lake Placid boys cross-country skiing team to a victory at the Queensbury Invitational on Saturday the North Creek Ski Bowl.

The Blue Bombers won the varsity meet with a total of 13 points, followed by Queensbury in second with 22 and Saranac Lake in third with 25 team points. Twelve teams competed in the race.

Saranac Lake placed second in the girls’ varsity race, and the Blue Bombers took fourth.

Flanigan covered the course in 14 minutes, 42.8 seconds, with Frantz not far behind in 14:58.1. Flanigan contributed to the overall team victory with his 10th-place finish in 16:39.1.

Saranac Lake’s top skiers in the boys race were Nick Kelting, who placed fifth in 15:10.8, Colter Cheney-Seymour (eighth in 16:04.2) and Adrian Hayden (12th in 17:01.5).

Sylvie Linck and Sophia Kelting were the top finishers for the Red Storm in the girls varsity race. Linck placed fourth with a time of 19:10.5, and Kelting was seventh in 19:32.2.

Annie Rose-McCandlish finished fifth in 19:16.8, Lura Johnson took 15th in 21:37.7, and Lynn Palen placed 17th in 22:03.3 to lead the way for Lake Placid.

Bailey Gengel of Queensbury won the girls varsity race in 17:14.4.

The Queensbury Invitational also included the opportunity to qualify for junior nationals, in under-16 and under-18 classes. James Flanigan was the top U18 Junior Boys Class 1 finisher, with Frantz third in the category. Colton Martin, racing for New York Ski Educational Foundation, finished second in 14:50. NYSEF skiers Van Ledger (eighth in 15:10.2) and Michael Skutt (15:30.6) were also in the race.

Marli Damp, a Lake Placid resident skiing for NYSEF, finished second in the U16 Girls Junior Class 2 race with a time of 17:35.9. Grace Mattern, of Rochester Nordic, was first in 17:28.7.
