Second Mini-Tri with a twist

Competitors line up along Mirror Lake Drive to begin Monday’s High Peaks Cyclery Mini Triathlon. The event normally includes a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run. On Monday, the race was changed to a run-bike-run format because the swim was called off due to lightning. (Enterprise photo — Lou Reuter)

LAKE PLACID — Although it’s happened in the past, Monday’s weekly High Peaks Cyclery mini triathlon went on with a little twist.

Normally, the race kicks off with a 400-yard swim before heading into the bike and run legs, but this time around lightning strikes around the Lake Placid area prompted the swim to be canceled and converted into a short run instead. The weekly competition then followed its normal routine with a 12-mile bike ride and a 3-mile run.

Albany’s Brian Woods took top honors on Monday, winning the second mini tri of the season with a finish time of 54 minutes, 36 seconds. Woods had the fastest split times in all three legs of the race. Two other triathletes also broke the one-hour barrier, with Peru’s Jason Amoriell finishing runner-up overall in 58:49 and Jay Niederbuhl placing third in 59:27.

Monday’s triathlon included 34 individual competitors and two teams.

The series continues each Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. through Aug. 13. Registration takes place between 5:30 and 6:15 p.m. Cost is $20. For more information, call High Peaks at 518-523-3764 or go to the store’s website or Facebook page.
