Can-Am title games on the air
SARANAC LAKE — FloSports is set to bring live championship streaming from the 45th annual Can-Am Rugby Tournament in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid. The competitions are set for July 27-29 on 13 pitches in the two communities.
The annual event is one of the oldest and largest tournaments in the nation. Play features predominantly 15 a side rugby, but Future Sevens will debut this year.
“FloSports comes at a great time for our tournament, the sport of rugby and a new division that will be on display here in the North Country,” Can-Am tournament director Jay Annis said. “We couldn’t imagine this just five or 10 years ago. But the technology is here and we’re happy to say we are in step with it. The fans who unfortunately can’t be here will be in for a real treat.”
FloSports is a direct-to-consumer, subscription-based sports media company located in Austin, Texas. Through live streaming of premier events, original documentaries, weekly studio shows, breaking news, technique videos and other comprehensive coverage, FloSports is unlocking a world of content that is appealing to hard-core sports fans.
The company purchased the Rugby Channel, which provided live streaming of championship matches in the 2017 Can-Am tournament. Four title contests and a Futures Sevens game will be highlighted on tournament weekend.
In the Future Sevens, more than 50 boys and girls under 18, will participate all weekend during the Can-Am tourney. Youthful stars such as Junior Waqavesi and Salote Tausinga, both from Sacramento, along with Ty Al-Jiboori of Tulsa and Cece Pennell of Summit, Colorado, will display the kind of skills in the Adirondacks that USA Rugby hopes will deliver future Olympic gold medals.
From the extended boys squad, the final Youth Olympic Games team will be selected. That announcement is set for Sunday night (July 29) at 7 p.m. at the Hotel Saranac. The squads will be housed at Paul Smith’s College. The YOG is slated for October in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Futures contests are similar in nature to the McDonald’s High School All American basketball game. Hence, this will feature the best of the best in youth rugby.
They will play on Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Saranac Lake High School football field; same times on Saturday at the North Elba fields in Lake Placid; and Sunday at North Country Community College in Saranac Lake. The final Futures game is slated for 2:30 p.m. and will be televised on www.flosportrugby.com along with the other four Can-Am championship games.
