USA Luge names junior rosters
LAKE PLACID — After racing internationally last year and posting excellent results in the Norton Seeding Series and Junior National Championships, USA Luge juniors Ashley Farquharson, Sean Hollander and the doubles team of Dana Kellogg and Duncan Segger have been named to the Junior National B Team.
The four young athletes lead a group of 71 racers who have achieved junior B, C and D team status. There were no A team selections.
Farquharson (Park City, Utah), Hollander (Lake Placid), and the doubles team of Kellogg (Williamsburg, Mass.) and Segger (Lake Placid), all swept the two seeding events and their respective national titles in March to claim their places. In addition, Kellogg and Segger raced to a silver medal in a Youth doubles World Cup event last winter.
They will be joined on the Junior B men’s team by Zach DiGregorio (Medway, Mass.), who was second in the seeding series and runner-up to Hollander for the national championship; Ian Smith (Carlisle, Mass.), the Youth A men’s champion as well as fourth in the junior seeding races and fifth in the junior nationals; and Sam Eckert (Wilmington), third in both the Youth A seeding races and junior seeding events, as well as bronze medalist in the junior nationals.
The Junior B women’s roster includes Sophie Kirkby (Ray Brook), who took the two Youth A seeding events and the national championship; Chevonne Forgan (Chelmsford, Mass.), second place to Farquharson in junior seeding race points and third in the junior nationals; and Joan Kemper (Chicago), third in junior seeding points and fourth in the nationals.
Luke Voegeli and Michael O’Gara round out the doubles selections. The duo was second in youth seeding and silver medalists in the youth nationals.
Another 23 competitors received C team designation, while there are 36 luge racers on the Junior D team, the youngest of all sliders.
The latter team is comprised of those kids discovered in the past year at the White Castle USA Luge Slider Search, USA Luge Challenge at several ski centers and the various club programs around the country.
