Maiorca ties for second in Chisum

MALONE — Lake Placid’s Drew Maiorca finished in a tie for second place Wednesday in the annual Craig Chisum Memorial Golf Tournament at the Malone Golf Club.

Maiorca, who will be appearing in the state championship tournament next week at Cornell University for the third year in a row, fired a 76 to finish tied for second place with Matt Delisle of Franklin Academy. They were just one shot off the winning score of 75 posted by Moriah’s Joey Stahl, who claimed the Section VII individual title Friday.

Each year, the Chisum tournament features golfers from sections VII and X, and also includes a competition between coaches and athletic directors from those sections.

First-year Saranac Lake head coach Ian Breen topped the field of participating coaches with a 77. Breen came in one stroke ahead of Mike Matejick of Massena.

The tournament included 40 student-athletes, 16 coaches and three athletic directors.

Section X won the team student competition with an 87 average. Section VII golfers combined to post a 91.56 average. Section X also took the coaching title with an 84.8 average, compared to the 86.60 average posted by Section VII coaches.

Lake Placid sophomore Hunter Wilmot also had a solid day on the course, shooting an 84 to finish fourth among the 24 Section VII golfers who participated. Paul Fine-Lease of Willsboro placed third for Section VII with a 78.

Terell Thomas of Massena, this year’s Section X individual champion, placed second in his section with a round of 78.

The tournament marked the final spring sports competition of the season for much of the field, but a number of the student-athletes who played will next appear at the state championship tournament at Cornell University. The two rounds will take place on Sunday and Monday.
