Saranac Lake picks up first baseball win of young season

High School Roundup

PORT HENRY — The Saranac Lake baseball finally landed in the win column.

After working mainly indoors during the preseason and then kicking off their schedule with three straight losses, the Red Storm won for the first time, topping Moriah 10-7 on Friday in the team’s fourth road game in a row.

Saranac Lake got a masterful performance on the mound from senior Michael Miller, who started the game, left with an injury in the third inning and then came back in the fourth to pitch the rest of the way and earn the victory.

Miller scattered seven hits, struck out seven and didn’t walk a single batter. He left the contest with a bloody nose after colliding with catcher Matt Kratts as they chased down a pop up in the third, but came back the next inning to finish the job.

The matchup was originally slated to be played in Saranac Lake but was switched to Moriah, making the Red Storm the home team in the contest.

Saranac Lake grabbed a 2-0 edge in the first and then fell behind when the Vikings scored four runs in the top of the third. Trailing 4-2, Saranac Lake mounted a seven-run rally in the bottom of the third to take a 10-4 lead and then held on the rest of the way.

Jaden Gladd came in from center field to replace Miller in the third. Miller threw 88 pitches, including 62 strikes.

Saranac Lake finished with seven hits and Gladd and sophomore Rhett Darrah led the way with two singles each. Darrah also scored three runs and stole three bases. Ben Munn rapped out a two-run double for Saranac Lake and Kratts also doubled in the victory. Miller also helped his own cause with an RBI single.

Zack Baker had a big day at the plate for the Vikings, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Jerin Sargent knocked in three runs. Jerin Sargent had three hits for Moriah, including a double.

Saranac Lake improved to 1-3 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference with the win while Moriah fell to 2-3.

Saranac Lake plays again Monday on the road against Beekmantown.

PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Placid boys and girls tennis teams finally stepped on a court to compete Friday, and for both squads, the season got off to a rocky start as host Plattsburgh swept each match by 6-0 scores.

The Blue Bombers headed into their matchup having to surrender one point with a forfeit in third singles. Sawyer Chase and Sonja Toishi fell in singles matches for Lake Placid and the Blue Bombers’ doubles teams of Camden Reiley and Tucker Jakobe and Tristan Spotts and Ben Isabella also suffered setbacks.

The good news for Lake Placid’s boys was after winning just one of 24 games played in the first sets, they came back to win 14 games in the next sets in the four matches.

In the top doubles competition, Brendan Whalen defeated Chase 6-0, 6-3, and Aiden Vogl posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Toishi in second singles. Toishi, an eighth-grader, was making her debut playing boys tennis after she won the girls Section VII title a year ago.

In the top doubles match, Ben Keever and Finn Gardner Puschak defeated Reiley and Jakobe 6-0, 7-6 with a 11-9 tiebreaker.

Playing in their first competitive tennis match ever, Spotts and Isabella were able to win three games during their loss. They were defeated by Plattsburgh’s Connor Cota and Julien Desmangles 6-1 and 6-2.

“We were facing perhaps the toughest team in the league,” Lake Placid boys coach Tyler Chase said. “In the second sets we did much better. I think of a lot of it was just being a little shell shocked. We’ve been out three days for practice compared to three or four weeks for Plattsburgh. There’s a big difference between hitting in the OTC (Olympic Training Center) and on the gym floor and actually getting out and playing on the court. Everyone got better as the match went on and that’s encouraging.”

Lake Placid’s girls also showed signs of a tough preseason and playing in new spots during their 6-0 setback to a strong Hornets squad.

In the top singles match, Lake Placid senior Laurel Miller was defeated by Briana Michaels 6-1, 6-2. The Blue Bombers next two players competed at doubles a season ago and got their first taste of singles on Friday. In the second singles match, Plattsburgh’s Vaia Graves defeated Lake Placid’s Barrett Smith 6-3, 6-1. In third singles, Julia Mitsoglou topped Blue Bombers senior Ashley Strack 6-2, 6-4.

Hornets Sophia Gottschall and Jesie Wang took the top doubles match, defeating Karli Casler and Chelby Lawrence 6-0, 6-1. Plattsburgh’s Gabby Dublsayk and Hannah Glicksman defeated Jen Godin and Jillian Robinson 6-2, 7-5 in second doubles.

“You could definitely tell Plattsburgh had more time on the courts than we did,” Lake Placid girls coach Jon Fremante said. “This was our first opportunity to get out and play, and we did get better. I saw some nice points and some smart tennis.”

Plattsburgh’s boys and girls both improved to 2-0 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference with the wins.

The Blue Bombers girls are back in action Monday on the road against the AuSable Valley Patriots, who aren’t fielding a boys team this spring. Lake Placid’s boys and girls will also play on Wednesday at home against Peru.
