High school teams prep for postseason

Area high school teams have been wrapping up their regular seasons and will soon be heading into the playoffs.

On Thursday, the Saranac Lake girls basketball team bounced back from a brutal loss earlier in the week with a 43-27 victory on the road against Plattsburgh High. Roslyn McClatchie, Kayleigh Merrill and Mistre Newton each tossed in seven points to lead the Red Storm, which owned a 17-point advantage at halftime.

The Lake Placid girls basketball team dropped their final Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference matchup, falling 55-30 on the road Thursday at Johnsburg. The Blue Bombers fell to 4-10 in league play and 7-13 overall with the loss.

In boys hoops, Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will battle it out today on the Blue Bombers’ court in their regular-season finale. It’s a non-league matchup starting at 1 p.m.

The game will be the fourth in five days for the Blue Bombers, who are coming off a 43-28 victory over Indian Lake-Long Lake on Thursday. In that matchup, Logan Brown paced Lake Placid with 10 points and Jake Corsen chipped in eight points. Eight players got in on the scoring for Lake Placid.

Saranac Lake’s hockey team was slated to end its Champlain Valley Athletic Conference schedule Friday at Beekmantown. Saranac Lake entered the game after a 7-4 loss on Tuesday that dropped its league record to 5-4 and 8-10-1 overall. Saranac Lake will have one home Section VII playoff game at the Civic Center on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lake Placid, which has struggled all season due to low numbers, was also ending CVAC play on Friday at home against Plattsburgh. The Hornets are ranked fourth in Division II in the New York State Sports Writers Association poll.

Lake Placid went winless in the CVAC and will be on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

The season already came to a close for the Tupper Lake boys basketball team. Competing as a Class D school in Section X, the Lumberjacks fell 64-50 to Edwards-Knox on Tuesday in playoff action. The Lumberjacks girls also lost in the playoffs, falling 72-20 at Harrisville on Wednesday.
