Red Storm volleyball advances to title match
SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake volleyball team punched its ticket for a spot in the Section VII, Class C championship match with a 3-1 victory over AuSable Valley on Wednesday.
The Red Storm will take on top-seeded Saranac Central, which swept Northeastern Clinton 3-0 on Wednesday night. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Beekmantown.
Saranac Lake, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, got past third-seeded AuSable Valley by taking the first game 25-20, the third game 25-15 and the fourth game 25-18. The Patriots edged the Red Storm 25-23 in the second game.
Danielle Gonyea and Marissa Gibbs each had big nights at the net for the Red Storm. Gonyea put down seven kills and had one block while Gibbs connected for five kills.
Sydney Andronica was Saranac Lake’s defensive star with 12 digs to go along with her two aces and six service points. Meagan O’Brien racked up five aces and 14 service points, while Madie Gay had five aces and nine points from the serving line.
Gonyea served up four aces and 11 points and O’Brien chipped in four assists.
Abi Walton led AuSable Valley with nine kills, while teammate Leah Shay had nine points, five digs and five kills.
