Merged SLP team settles for OT loss in debut

LAKE PLACID — Lake Placid and Saranac Lake played their first game as a merged girls hockey team Tuesday night in a matchup against traditional powerhouse Potsdam.

The team, now known as SLP, benefited from an exceptional game in goal by Whitney Battistoni but had to settle for a 4-3 overtime loss.

Potsdam’s Erica Sloan scored the game-winning goal 1:49 into overtime to lock up the victory for the Sandstoners. It was her third goal of the game.

SLP took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Alex Hill scored 1:50 into the period and Lea Hill connected on a short-handed goal at the 8:12 mark.

Potsdam answered with two tallies in the third period, but SLP’s Makeda Thompson found the back of the net at 11:09 to send the game into an extra period.

Battistoni had a huge game in goal for SLP, turning away 30 of the 34 shots she faced. SLP was credited with 15 shots on goal throughout the contest.

SLP will be back in action next Wednesday with a game against Salmon River at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid.
