The Paul Smith’s College rugby team capped off a successful season Sunday, Nov. 19 with a 6-5 victory over Alfred University in the consolation bracket of the National Small College Rugby Organization tournament in North Adams, Massachusetts.

Paul Smith’s advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament after beating Vassar College 26-24 on Nov. 11. The Bobcats were joined in the NSCRO Region I final four tournament at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by Salve Regina (Rhode Island), Maine-Farmington and Alfred.

Paul Smith’s faced Salve Regina in the semifinal and lost 49-0, while Maine-Farmington downed Alfred 48-12. Salve Regina went on to win the NSCRO national championship with a 46-22 victory over UMF and Paul Smith’s beat Alfred for third place.

“It was good to end the season on a win,” Paul Smith’s coach Mark Buckley said. “This was the furthest a Paul Smith’s team has ever gotten in the tournament. The guys were happy. It was a very fulfilling season.”

The Bobcats finished the season with a 7-3 overall record, including a 31-26 victory over SUNY Plattsburgh that secured the North Division title.

Anthony Catalano and Bo Liguori served as team captains for Paul Smith’s, which will lose eight seniors from this year’s team to graduation.
