Tennis rivalry continues

Participants in the Lake Placid-Saranac Lake Tennis Challenge pose for a photo at Whiteface Tennis Center in Lake Placid following play on Monday, Sept. 4. The third annual challenge consisted of six mixed doubles teams from the villages of Saranac Lake and Lake Placid squaring off for bragging rights and the presentation of the, “coveted Tennis Trophy, emblematic of some tennis superiority in the North Country.” Saranac Lake amassed 88 total games won to earn the victory over Lake Placid, which finished with 69 games won. It was the second year in a row that Saranac Lake won the Challenge. Beth and Ron Edgley again garnered the most games won for Saranac Lake with 21. Ikuo Toishi and his daughter Sonja Toishi were the big earners for Lake Placid with 20 wins. Other teams for Saranac Lake were George Stauffenberg/Gina Dumnd, Henry and Jessie Jacobe, Julie Weinstein/Mark Coleman, Kate Hale/John Mathiason and LeeAnn Baker/Tyler Chase. Lake Placid players were Jennifer Ledger/Jim Cushman, Pam Smith/Rich Cotton, Mike Sorel/Judy Borzilleri and Kyle Woodleif. (Photo provided)
