Griffin sits fourth after first day at US Amateur

Art Griffin is in the early mix at the world’s most prestigious amateur golf tournament.

On Monday, the talented 21-year-old golfer from Lake Placid may have shot the most memorable round of his life, firing a 4-under par 66 to stand in fourth place after opening day at the 117th United States Amateur Open taking place on two courses in Southern California.

Griffin, who attends Charleston Southern University, opened at Bel Air Country Club and turned in a round that included an eagle, six birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. He enters the second day of the week-long competition two shots behind a trio of golfers who are tied for the lead after shooting 6-under par rounds of 64.

Griffin will look for another great 18-hole result today when he moves over to the Riviera Country Club layout for the second round of stroke play.

The U.S. Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play, after which the 312-player field is reduced to the lowest 64 scorers. There will be six rounds of match play, starting Wednesday. The quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18 and Saturday, Aug. 19, respectively. The championship concludes with a 36-hole final on Sunday, Aug. 20, starting at 7:45 a.m. Pacific time.

Past winners of the U.S. Amateur are a who’s who of the game’s greatest players, among them Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who won the tournament three years in a row between 1994 and 1996.
