Red Storm hockey, hoops seasons end

PLATTSBURGH — The Saranac Lake boys hockey season came to an end Tuesday night after a 3-1 loss to Beekmantown in the quarterfinal round of the Section VII tournament.

Beekmantown scored the game’s first goal in the opening minute, but Red Storm senior Drew Sturgeon responded with a goal at the 12:33 mark to pull even. Sophomore Austen Reyell was credited with the assist on the play.

The second period was all Beekmantown as the Indians built a 3-1 lead with goals by Christian Wawrzynski and Josh McCauley.

The Red Storm were unable to puncture the Indians lead in the third period and were forced to settle for the loss. Saranac Lake finished with an 8-9-3 overall record.

Sophomore Bruno Freeman turned away 25 shots in goal for the Red Storm, while Cole Harvey had a solid game in net for Beekmantown with 23 stops. Beekmantown outshot Saranac Lake 26-24.

The fourth-seeded Indians earned a spot in the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Lake Placid on Thursday in the Olympic Center. Northeastern Clinton, an 11-0 winner over Saranac on Tuesday night, will take on Plattsburgh in the other semifinal.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Northeastern Clinton 56, Saranac Lake 25

CHAMPLAIN — The Northeastern Clinton girls basketball team came out of the gates with a flurry Tuesday night on the way to a 56-25 victory over Saranac Lake in the quarterfinal round of the Section VII, Class B tournament.

The Cougars outscored Saranac Lake 20-0 in the first quarter and put the game out of reach with a 14-3 second quarter. The Red Storm showed life in the third quarter with a 19-8 advantage, but by then it was too late.

Jayda Buckley drained two 3-pointers for Saranac Lake on the way to a seven-point night. Andrea Boon also scored seven points, while Roslyn McClatchie contributed five.

Abbie Sample and Kya McComb each connected for 15 points to pace Northeastern Clinton, which will take on second-seeded Peru on Saturday. Saranac Lake came into the game as the No. 6 seed and finished with a 5-16 overall record.
