Red Storm fall in overtime

PERU — The Saranac Lake boys basketball season ended in dramatic fashion Wednesday night against Peru in the quarterfinal round of the Section VII, Class B tournament.

Peru used an 11-6 run in the fourth quarter to erase a deficit and force the game into overtime with the score knotted at 47-47. Saranac Lake managed just two free throws in the extra period and the Indians connected for a layup, a 3-pointer and a free throw to escape with the 53-49 victory.

Joe Viscardo led the way offensively for the Red Storm with 16 points, six of which came on 3-pointers. Teammates DJ Morgan chipped in 10 points and Jarrett Ashton hit for seven.

Peru’s Justin LaPorte scored a game-high 24 points and collected 11 rebounds and six steals. Hunter Caron scored 12 points and Perry Marvin had 10 for the Indians.

Saranac Lake led much of the game, taking a 19-9 lead after the first quarter and a 27-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The Red Storm led 42-36 after three quarters to set the stage for Peru’s late comeback.

The Red Storm came into the contest as the fifth-seeded team in the tournament. Peru, the No. 4 seed, will face top-seeded Plattsburgh in the semifinals Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Saranac Lake finished the season with an 8-13 overall record.
