SARANAC LAKE — For dozens of people who have skated on Saranac Lake High School hockey teams over the years, reuniting on Dec. 26 on their old home ice sheet has probably become as much a tradition as unwrapping gifts that were laid out under the Christmas tree the day before.

On Monday, the Saranac Civic Center played host to the annual high school alumni hockey games held on the day after Christmas.

And as usual, some of the best players who ever laced up the skates for Saranac Lake were out on the ice. And again, the lineups were a mix of local grads and others who came to town from both coasts and places in between to be with their families and friends for the holiday season.

The action kicked off Monday with the women’s alumni game, which was taking place for the second year in a row.

The men’s game followed, with the two teams donning the red and white jerseys that Red Strom teams wore during the mid 2000s.

Both games this year had strong rosters in terms of the quality of skating, as well as actual numbers. About two dozen graduates took part in the women’s matchup, and there were even more in the men’s contest with both benches full.

In keeping with another tradition that goes along with the men’s game, members of this season’s Saranac Lake boys team served as coaches, referees and time and score keepers.

The women’s game ended with a 2-0 score and featured some great goaltending. Meanwhile, the Red squad toppled the white 7-4 in the men’s matchup.
