August 31, 2014
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — A Brooklyn man is charged with attempted murder after police say he exchanged gun fire with an officer on a Brooklyn street.

Police say Naim Owens wounded Officer John Hirschberger in the thigh during a foot pursuit around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

They say officers returned fire and wounded the 22-year-old Owens in the back.

He's hospitalized in stable condition. Hirschberger was treated and released.

Owens is charged two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, assault and attempted assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Information on his lawyer wasn't immediately available.

Police say the shooting happened as Owens attempted to flee from officers who saw him adjusting his waistband. They say a gun was recovered in the area.
