BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A 20-year-old Sacred Heart University student has died after being struck by a car while crossing a Bridgeport street.

A spokeswoman for Saint Vincent Medical Center said Saturday that the parents of Kaitlyn Doorhy had given permission to confirm the death of their daughter. Her organs are being donated for transplant.

Police say Doorhy was crossing Madison Avenue behind another woman Friday afternoon. A preliminary investigation found the driver swerved to avoid hitting the other woman and struck Doorhy. The driver hasn't been charged.

The junior from Mattituck, New York, was majoring in political science and belonged to the Kappa Delta sorority.

University president John Petillo says on the school's website that a memorial service will be held on campus next week and counseling is being offered to the community.
