BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Police say a 20-year-old Sacred Heart University student is in critical condition after being struck by a car while crossing a street in Bridgeport.

Police identified the student as Kaitlyn Doorhy, a junior from Mattituck, New York. The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. Friday and remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against the driver of the car.

Bridgeport police spokesman William Kaempffer said in a statement that Doorhy was crossing Madison Avenue behind another woman. He said a preliminary investigation found the driver swerved to avoid hitting the other woman and struck Doorhy.

Police issued an erroneous statement Saturday morning saying Doorhy had died. But hours later, they sent out a statement saying she remained in critical condition at Saint Vincent Hospital.
