There are many causes out there looking for donations for one thing or another, but one that should take priority is giving to your local volunteer fire and rescue department.
They have been busy this summer responding to numerous accidents from auto crashes to house fires. They approach each call with the full focus on saving lives and property and maintaining quality of life for us.
Besides the fundraising that our local fire and rescue departments do, they also are looking for volunteers. Statewide, there has been a desperate need to recruit volunteer fire department members. While it takes a lot of time and commitment, there is a tremendous payback for helping people and saving lives. Not to mention the pride of wearing the uniforms at parades and other community events.
They go through an intensive variety of emergency training to be prepared to enter dangerous situations where they put their lives on the line to help others. It is a dedication that takes time away from their jobs and families, but is graciously excused, knowing they are called to duty for the most important roles in our community.
The money donated to our local fire and rescue departments in Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Piercefield, Bloomingdale, Jay/Upper Jay, Keene/Keene Valley and Wilmington greatly benefits us all. While the villages and towns help with basic support of the firehouse and skilled drivers, the needed donations from private sources are used for equipment and training expenses.
Whether you donate money or decide to volunteer your time and efforts, there is nothing as important as to be part of saving lives and helping the community. We urge you to contact your local fire or rescue department to find out how you can help.
