A new summer playground is set to open this week at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center.
Adventure Zone, a project of the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, added several new activities like a bungee trampoline, a climbing course that looks like a spiderweb made of ropes, a rock climbing wall, bounce house, a double-lane blow-up slide and slack lines.
"It's a great playground for kids," ORDA spokesman Jon Lundin said.
It will be located in the Bear Den camp near the kids section of the ski area at Whiteface, according to Lundin.
Michelle Burns, the operations manager at the Whiteface Visitors Bureau, said this Friday's grand opening event will be free to the public. It coincides with Bike Fest, which combines mountain and road bike races and BMX demonstrations in Wilmington this weekend.
"I'd say the most exciting thing is that their grand opening this weekend is going to be free because of Bike Fest," Burns said. "It's a great way for people to get out and try and see everything it has to offer."
"The town is partnering with ORDA to make it free for the weekend," Wilmington town Supervisor Randy Preston said.
The bungee trampoline is a neat concept, Lundin said.
"You've got this belt around your waist, so it makes sure you're going to jump straight," he said. "You use the power of the trampolines and bungee cords to propel yourself. So you're jumping pretty high."
Lundin said there are also a few activities that adults can enjoy.
"Slack lining would certainly be an adult activity," Lundin said. "The rock climbing wall could be a fun activity for adults."
The finishing touches of the playground's assembly will happen early this week.
"Things are being put in place right now," Lundin said. "It's just another way to continue to attract guests to Whiteface in Wilmington and ORDA's venues. We are always looking for new ideas to expand revenue and bring guests to our venues."
The activities will begin on Friday and be open daily until Oct. 13. During the winter the playground will be disassembled. The hours of operation are 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. On Saturdays, from July 5 through Aug. 30, it will be open one hour longer, until 7 p.m.
The cost of Adventure Zone is $10 for the first hour, $20 for an all-day pass and season passes are $50.
Other summer activities at Whiteface include the Cloudsplitter Gondola ride to the top of Little Whiteface, mountain biking, guided hikes disc golf, yoga and Rock the Face concerts.
Preston added that there are a few other events this weekend in Wilmington. The Jump Jam is another free event on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wilmington Youth Center. There is a beach party on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Bike Fest is also this Saturday.
