A Tupper Lake woman was arrested Friday for allegedly driving her son to school while impaired by drugs and crashing into a pair of parked cars.
Nicole B. Logie, 38, was arrested by village police in the L.P. Quinn Elementary School parking lot at 8:42 a.m. following an investigation into an incident she was involved in there.
Police Chief Eric Proulx, in an email, said Logie had just dropped her son off at school in her 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander and was trying to leave the school parking lot when she struck a pair of cars. Tupper Lake police Officer Troy Griffin and Sgt. Geoff Carmichael of the Saranac Lake Police Department, who was off-duty at the time, were both standing outside the school's main entrance at the time and heard the crash, Proulx said.
"Both officers went to the crash location and spoke to Logie and through interviews and investigation determined that she was impaired," Proulx wrote.
Logie was taken into custody, transported to the police station and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle as a passenger under 16 years of age, a felony.
The latter charge is a violation of Leandra's Law, a statute enacted by the state in 2009 and named for Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old New York City girl who died after he friend's mother crashed the car they were in while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Proulx told the Enterprise that his officers determined Logie was impaired by drugs based on "field sobriety testing, her actions and some admissions she made," although he didn't know what drugs she may have taken. Police obtained a blood sample from Logie that will be sent to the state police laboratory for testing, Proulx said.
Logie was processed and arraigned in village court in front of Justice Christopher Delair. She was released after posting $10,000 cash bail.
The other two vehicles were unoccupied and sustained minor damage, Proulx said. There were no injuries.
