Wonderful care at AMC

February 10, 2014
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

I am writing today to praise the Adirondack Medical Center and High Peaks Hospice for the exceptional care that was provided to our family recently.

Our mother, Renee Hughes, had been fighting cancer for over two years and was admitted to AMC on Jan. 20. From the minute my sister, brother and I arrived, the staff did everything to accommodate Mom's needs. Previous to this, we had been taking care of Mom at home and were not completely comfortable making decisions regarding her care. With help from High Peaks Hospice, we chose to put Mom in the hospital, where we were all put at ease.

Katie was Mom's nurse from Hospice and did a great job coordinating Mom's care. The three nurses from AMC who cared for Mom and also answered our million questions were Kristen, Kayla and Melissa. All three were very compassionate. They kept Mom comfortable and also guided us calmly, peacefully and beautifully through the end stages of life. There were times when we had 10 to 15 family members holding vigil at Mom's bedside. The staff set up a hospitality cart outside Mom's door and kept it stocked with coffee, soda, water, doughnuts, etc., and also moved in beds so that we could stay through the night.

During this time there were also many visits from the hospital clergy members. They prayed with us at Mom's bedside, which gave us all great comfort, and also left a beautiful prayer book for us to read to Mom.

Mom passed peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 22. As terrible as it is to watch someone you love pass, we will always remember her final days in a setting where she was treated with respect, dignity and cared for in a most professional manner.

Thank you to Katie, Kristen, Kayla and Melissa - we will never forget you - and thank you to all of the AMC third-floor staff and clergy for everything.

Sincerely,

Danielle Bishop and Michelle Beaney
