PAUL SMITHS - Keene resident Jan Wellford outlasted Saranac Lake's Bryce Hartman to take first place in the 10-kilometer "I Have a Dream" skate ski race Sunday morning at the Paul Smith's College VIC.
Wellford didn't get the best start. He fell down at the start line while trying to start his stop watch. He recovered quickly though and caught up with the pack.
He eventually took command in the last third of the race, finishing in 32 minutes, 4 seconds. Hartman came in 40 seconds behind him.

"I took the lead at a sharp corner and hammered, and I guess he faded at that point, but I thought we were going to be sprinting to the finish together," Wellford said. "Not a super deep race, so it was nice to go out there and win one."
There were 13 competitors who came out for the race on a frigid day. The race was originally scheduled to take place over Martin Luther King weekend, but was rescheduled due to a lack of snow. There appeared to be plenty of snow on Sunday.
"It was a good race," Hartman said. "Tough course. Lots of hills. The snow was really slow because of how cold it is, but I felt good. I got a little tired in the end, but I tried to keep pushing through it."
Third place went to Chris Rose of Peru, who finished in 34:15. Stanley Hatch of Peru took fourth in 35:17 and Jim Kobak of Peru finished fifth in 35:44.
