Storm fall short against Hornets

PLATTSBURGH - The Saranac Lake boys hockey team held its own defensively, but was unable to muster enough goals as Plattsburgh secured a 2-0 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center.

Blake Darrah was exceptional in net for the Red Storm, stopping 31 of the 33 shots he faced. Plattsburgh outshot Saranac Lake 33-18.

John Fine-Lease scored the game's first goal at the 1:11 mark of the second period. The Hornets added an insurance goal at 3:33 of the third period when Eric Bechard broke through for a marker.

Dean Dashnaw recorded the shutout in goal for Plattsburgh.

It was the third loss in a row for the Red Storm, who fell to 4-9-1.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Westport 41, Lake Placid 37

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls basketball team raced out to an early lead Wednesday night but was unable to hold on as Westport escaped with a 41-37 victory.

The Blue Bombers led 17-9 after the first quarter and 24-19 at halftime. Westport took the lead with a 10-2 third quarter and held on for the win.

Chloe Uebrick poured in 15 points and Julianna Matos had seven to spark the Blue Bombers offensively. Cheyenne Blair pulled down seven rebounds to help the effort.

Brendee Russell led Westport with 15 points, while teammates Ellie Schwoebel and Sarah Looby chipped in 12 apiece.

AuSable Valley 68, Saranac Lake 36

SARANAC LAKE - The AuSable Valley girls basketball team used a 26-6 second quarter to take control of what became a 68-36 victory over Saranac Lake on Wednesday.

Haleigh Morgan paced Saranac Lake with six points, followed by teammate Katelyn Hewitt with five.

Meghan Strong led all scorers in the game with 15 points for the Patriots. Madison McCabe chipped in 14 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northern Adirondack 57, Saranac Lake 24

ELLENBURG - The Northern Adirondack boys basketball team took a 22-0 lead into the second quarter and never looked back on the way to a 57-24 victory over Saranac Lake on Wednesday.

The Bobcats built on the first quarter advantage for a 31-2 lead at halftime.

Devin Cowan scored 10 points to lead the way offensively for Saranac Lake.

Cory Lafountain and Alden Kerr had nine points apiece for Northern Adirondack, while Ethan King collected seven points and eight rebounds.
