SARANAC LAKE - A local woman was arrested Sunday after police say she hit a 9-year-old boy in the face and banged his head against a wall.

Cynthia Powers, 24, of Saranac Lake, was charged with third-degree attempted assault and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, all misdemeanors.

Police Chief Bruce Nason said the charges stem from an investigation of an incident that allegedly took place Friday evening at a home on Lake Street. Powers allegedly slapped the boy in the face, grabbed his hair and banged his head against a wall.

Powers was charged with attempted assault "because we don't have any injuries that would meet the requirements of an assault," Nason said. Other than a scratch, Nason said the boy had no injuries that required medical treatment.

Police said Powers and the boy are related, but he declined to say how. He said there was a witness to the incident and "something that led up" to it, but the chief wouldn't reveal what that was. Police still have additional interviews to conduct, Nason said.

Powers was processed at the police station, arraigned in village court and released to the supervision of probation. An order of protection was issued, police said.
