SARANAC LAKE - Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau has released his button design for the 2014 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.
Using this year's Winter Carnival theme "Celtic Carnival," Trudeau's illustration shows Doonesbury character Duke playing the bagpipes. Trudeau, who was raised in Saranac Lake, has created the button design for every Winter Carnival since 1981.
The Winter Carnival buttons will be for sale at merchants throughout the village by early next week. The buttons cost $4 each. A list of locations carrying the buttons will be announced soon. The buttons will also be sold during Winter Carnival, Jan. 31 to Feb. 9, at its headquarters.
Winter Carnival buttons are one of the longest-running traditions at the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, collected by residents and visitors every year.
Garretson Beekman Trudeau was born in New York City on July 21, 1948, the son of Dr. Francis B. and Jean Trudeau. He grew up in Saranac Lake and attended Lake Colby School from kindergarten through sixth grade, after which his parents sent him away to boarding school.
