Glad pharmacy recognizes smoking danger

November 27, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor:

I want to take a moment to thank pharmacist Jim Bevilacqua and staff at the Post Office Pharmacy in Saranac Lake. On Nov. 20, the Pharmacy Corner topic submitted by Bevilacqua was "Women and Smoking: Bad News, Good News." The piece was paired with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise's excellent promotion of the Great American Smokeout which took place the next day, Nov. 21.

Bevilacqua's column included new health risks to women caused by tobacco smoke, encouraging news about stopping smoking before age 35 and beyond, information on stop-smoking medications and tips on quitting. In addition, the column included an important reminder that pharmacists are a great resource to turn to for guidance. Pharmacists can inform us about stop-smoking medications prescribed by our doctor, discuss other treatments available and answer questions and concerns about stopping tobacco.

Additionally, we want to publically praise the Post Office Pharmacy for not selling tobacco products in its store. It is the only pharmacy in our community that has chosen not to sell these products. This is a practice supported by a variety of professional organizations. The American Pharmacists Association, National Community Pharmacists Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all passed policies stating they support restrictions on the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies. Why? These groups cite the contradiction of selling tobacco products which cause deadly diseases in establishments that sell medications to treat these same diseases as well as a myriad of other products to promote health and wellness.

We hope you join us and thank the Post Office Pharmacy for keeping the health of the community as the touchstone of its decision making.
