SARANAC LAKE - Police say a local man broke into an apartment and threatened another person with a baseball bat if he gave information to police.

Patrick A. St. John, 23, of Saranac Lake, was arrested at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with with first-degree burglary, second-degree attempted assault, third-degree intimidating a witness, second-degree menacing, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Police Chief Bruce Nason said St. John allegedly entered an apartment on Shepard Avenue around 6 p.m. that night wielding a baseball bat.

"St. John then attempted to hit the individual with the baseball bat and caused damage to a door and a door frame with the bat," police said in a release. "St. John is also alleged to have made threats to the homeowner to not provide information to the police on another case or he would cause the owner physical injury."

Nason wouldn't reveal what the other case was. He said the incident was reported almost immediately to police, who tracked St. John down and arrested him a short time later.

St. John was arraigned in village court and remanded to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.
