Vermontville man gets 4 years for statutory rape

A Vermontville man was sentenced to four years behind bars Tuesday for having sex with a pair of underage girls.

Christopher Joiner, 21, was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury in April on six counts of second-degree rape and six counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Assistant District Attorney Gary Pasqua said Joiner had sexual intercourse with two girls on multiple occasions from October to December of 2012. Pasqua declined to give the ages of the girls but said they were both under the age of 17 at the time. The incidents occurred in the Malone area, and Joiner knew both girls, Pasqua said.

"It wasn't a situation where it was strangers or it was forcible (rape)," the prosecutor said.

One of the girls reported what happened to Malone-based state police, who arrested Joiner in December 2012. An investigation also led to his arrest by Malone village police in January of this year on charges involving the second girl, Pasqua said.

Joiner pleaded guilty in July to two counts of second-degree rape, one for each victim. He was sentenced Tuesday by Franklin County Court Judge Robert Main Jr. to two years in state prison on each charge. The sentences are to run consecutively, so Joiner faces four years in prison. He was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision on each charge, he must pay a series of fees and surcharges, and he will be listed on the state's sex offender registry.

Pasqua said the DA's office was satisfied with the outcome of the prosecution.

"I think the judge took everything into consideration and handed down an appropriate sentence," he said.

Joiner was represented at his sentencing by Anson Rhodes of the county Conflict Defender's Office.
