Northwood hockey opens season

ROCHESTER - The Northwood girls hockey team opened the season with a strong performance in the Rochester Fire on Ice tournament.

The Huskies won their first two games and tied their third to earn the No. 3 spot in the playoff round. Northwood advanced to the semifinals after outlasting the NJ Rockets in overtime. Nicole Mensi scored her second goal of the tournament in the extra period to land the Huskies a spot in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Team Detoit, an all-star team that consisted of three former Tier One teams, sent Northwood home with after a 2-0 victory.

Erin Kishoni, Rachel Lustenring and Cailey Hutchinson each scored goals during the tournament for the Huskies. Alyson Matteau and Mensi scored twice.

Megan Messuri and Katey Snyder chipped in with solid goaltending to lead the Northwood defense.

Northwood beat St. FX Hockey Academy and Gilmour Academy then tied Ridley in pool play action.

BOYS HOCKEY

Northwood wins two

The Northwood Junior Hockey Club opened its season with two wins over CP Dynamo, a U18AAA team out of Clifton Park.

Six different players scored for the Huskies in a 6-1 win Friday night. Northwood won the second game on Saturday with a 2-0 vicotry over CP Dynamo.

The Northwood Junior team travels to the Beantown Classic this weekend in Exeter, N.H.

VOLLEYBALL

Saranac 3, Saranac Lake 0

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Central volleyball team handed Saranac Lake a 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 defeat Monday night.

Samantha Martin racked up 10 digs, three kills, four aces and 11 service points to pace the Red Storm. Teammate Ellen Miner chipped in seven digs, two aces and three assists, while Crystal Plowe Sovey had seven digs and two aces and Brittany Woodruff collected nine digs.

Anna Dorrance recorded 16 points from the serving line to go along with her six assists and two aces.

Northeastern Clinton 3, Lake Placid 0

CHAMPLAIN - The Northeastern Clinton volleyball team had to contend with an improving Lake Placid team Monday and eventually came up with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-20 victory.

Ally Wallace had 10 service points and four aces, Melissa Rath had seven points, two aces and two kills and Brenna Garrett chipped in six assists and three kills to lead the way for the Blue Bombers.

Ashley McCoy registred 14 points, two aces, four kills and six digs to pace Northeastern Clinton.
