LAKE PLACID - About 1,000 members of a major public worker union are gathering here this week for a conference.
The Civil Service Employees Association is holding its 103rd annual Delegates Meeting at the Conference Center at Lake Placid.
CSEA bills itself as a grassroots union that makes negotiating contracts its number-one priority.
"The CSEA has been meeting in Lake Placid since the 1985," Maryjane Lawrence, director of sales and marketing for the Conference Center at Lake Placid, said in a press release. "The entire community is excited to welcome them to Lake Placid once again."
Conference Center organizers advise local businesses that all the CSEA meetings will be held at the Conference Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon Friday. All meals will be on their own, with the exception of one dinner, which will be hosted at the Olympic Center's 1980 Rink Wednesday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. Lunch breaks will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. each day.
This summer, a tense standoff was resolved between CSEA and the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, which runs the Olympic Center and other winter sports facilities. The two settled on a contract for ORDA employees after the previous one had expired in 2009.
