SARANAC LAKE - A car careened off the road and crashed into a house here Friday evening.

Saranac Lake Fire Chief Brendan Keough said the car struck the front corner of 1037 Pine St., near the intersection with Payeville Lane, around 6:50 p.m.

The driver of the car was taken to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, but Keough said he didn't know the extent of his injuries.

Keough said there were people in the house at the time of the crash, but they were not injured. He said the house sustained structural damage.

"It didn't completely breach the wall, but there's damage on the interior walls of the house from it," Keough said.

Firefighters put out a small fire from an overheated tire, assisted rescue personnel and stood by until the car could be towed from the scene. They returned to the fire station at 8 p.m.
