A Jay couple is in jail today after being charged with sexually abusing a young girl over the course of two years.

State police arrested Mark J. Devlin, 64, and Donna M. Tefoe, 40, and charged them with criminal sexual act in the first degree, a class B felony; sexual abuse in the first degree, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

The child was 6 years old when the abuse began, state police spokeswoman Jennifer Fleishman told the Enterprise this morning. She would not release the child's relation to the couple, who live together in Jay.

Fleishman said the abuse took place between 2010 and 2012, but state police just got wind of it. She would not say how police knew about it.

Devlin and Tefoe were arraigned at Keene town court and were both remanded to Essex County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond. They are scheduled to appear in Jay town court at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The investigation is still ongoing, and more charges are pending.
