Marinis lights up Willsboro with 4 goals

LAKE PLACID - Liza Marinis put on a show Wednesday, scoring four goals to lead the Lake Placid girls soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Willsboro.

Marinis, a sophomore, scored her first goal 15 minutes into the first half on a pass from Jillian Goulette to give the Blue Bombers a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors cut their deficit to 2-1 just before the half on a direct kick, but it was all Marinis in the second stanza. Marinis scored in the 10th, 15th and 30th minutes of the second half to ensure the Lake Placid victory.

Lake Placid freshman Taylor Barney scored the Bombers first goal with 7:00 showing on the clock. Goulette had two assists, while Payton Barney and Sage Miller each had one.

Emily Barney stopped three shots in goal for the Blue Bombers, who held a 21-4 advantage in shots. Stephanie Blanchard recorded 16 saves for Willsboro.

Rachel Burt's goal in the 35th minute was the second goal for the Warriors all season.

The win boosted Lake Placid's Northern Soccer League Division II record to 3-2-1, while Willsboro dropped to 0-6.

Northeastern Clinton 3, Saranac Lake 1

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake girls soccer team led early, but then relented Wednesday in a 3-1 Northern Soccer League Division I loss to Northeastern Clinton.

Cecily Decker broke through early after taking a pass from Allycia Woodruff to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead 6:02 into the game.

The Cougars fought back as Katie Matott scored the equalizer five minutes later to send the teams into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

Matott struck again in the second half and Peyton Sample put the game out of reach with a goal near the end of the game.

Jenny Ward stopped nine shots in goal for Saranac Lake, while Christina Paoloa had seven saves for NCCS.

Saranac Lake fell to 0-5 with the loss, while Northeastern Clinton improved to 2-4.

VOLLEYBALL

Madrid-Waddington 3, Tupper Lake 0

TUPPER LAKE - The Tupper Lake volleyball team held strong, but eventually had to settle for a 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 loss to Madrid-Waddington on Wednesday night.

Sidney Kulzer, Nicole Jessie and Alexis Cassell each played well for the Lumberjacks. Jessie racked up 13 service points, to go along with six aces and four kills. Kulzer chipped in 10 points, five aces, three kills and one dig, while Cassell had 10 assists and one service point.

Hannah Austin, Jasmine Trombley and Dia Richards each recorded 10 points to lead the Yellowjackets. Jen King put down six kills and Brittanie Dawley had 12 assists.
