Red Storm outbattle Lake Placid spikers

SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake and Lake Placid volleyball teams locked up in a Tri-Lakes battle Tuesday night, with the Red Storm walking away with a 3-1 victory.

Saranac Lake took the first game 27-25 and the second 25-23. The Blue Bombers extended the match with a 25-17 win in the third game, before the Red Storm put the match away with a 28-26 victory.

Samantha Martin and Ellen Miner led the way for Saranac Lake. Martin served up eight aces to go along with her four digs and 11 points overall. Miner had four assists, two aces, two kills, one block and seven service points.

Alivia Sapone chipped in two kills and two assists and Crystal Plowe-Sovey had two assists, one kill, one ace and four points. Brittany Woodruff contributed three digs, two kills and three points and Katie Burgess had five digs, two aces and two kills.

Lake Placid was led by Ally Wallace, who had seven aces and 18 points. Brenna Garrett did her part with 11 points, five aces, four assists and four kills and Kiana Fell had six kills.

Both teams return to action Thursday as Saranac Lake travels to Northern Adirondack and Lake Placid is on the road against Peru.

GIRLS SOCCER

Beekmantown 6, Saranac Lake 3

SARANAC LAKE - The Beekmantown girls soccer team raced out to a 4-1 lead and was able to hold on for a 6-3 victory over Saranac Lake on Tuesday.

The Eagles soared to a 3-0 first-half lead as Courtney Wilson scored in the first five minutes and Kirstin Villeamaire netted two within the next 10 minutes.

The Red Storm got on the board with 10 minutes left in the first half when Kelsie Gliniski connected for an unassisted goal. Villemaire responded with two more goals to put the game out of reach.

Ashley Roddy scored her first varsity goal on a pass from Cecily Decker with eight minutes left in the game. Following another Beekmantown goal, Decker found the back of the net after taking a pass from Logan Hochwald.

"Our girls played hard the entire game," said Saranac Lake coach Amanda Zullo. "We had a lot of opportunities, which we will work to capitalize on for next time.

"Beekmantown is a strong and well-skilled team. Their midfield play is impressive."

Lake Placid 3, Elizabethtown-Lewis 1

ELIZABETHTOWN - Senior Adele Jesmer had a goal and an assist to lift the Lake Placid girls soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Elizabethtown-Lewis on Tuesday.

Liza Marinis opened the Blue Bombers scoring with a goal 14:50 into the first half. Taylor Barney gave Lake Placid a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later after taking a pass from Jesmer.

The Lions cut the deficit to 2-1 on an Angel Barnes goal 13:53 into the second half, but Jesmer put the game away two minutes later with a score on a pass from Jillian Goulette.

Laura Stanton stopped two shots in goal for Lake Placid, which outshot the Lions 13-3.

CADYVILLE - Saranac Lakers Zane Pelleteri and Anna Izzo each placed fifth overall Monday in a cross country meet against Seton Catholic and Beekmantown.

Pelleteri completed the course in 18 minutes, 44 seconds. Evan Page of Setn Catholic won the boys race in 17:07, followed by three Beekmantown runners.

Adam Branch finished 14th in 21:01 and Max Paul was 15th in 21:22 for the Red Storm boys, which dropped both their dual meet scoring.

The Saranac Lake girls won their team scoring 22-33 against Beekmantown.

Izzo finished in 22:42, followed by Grace Sullivan, who took seventh in 23:18, Johanna Mohrs, who took eighth in 23:20, and Jackie Garso in 11th with a 24:49.

Margaret Champagne of Seton Catholic won the girls race in 20:09.
