SARANAC LAKE - On Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., two authors will be signing books at the Tri-Lakes Center for Independent Living, 43 Broadway in Saranac Lake. Live music will be provided by Tom Techman and Michael Northrop.
Northrop acquired a traumatic brain injury at age 10 which wiped out his short-term memory. When he was 30, a cerebral aneurism almost took his life. His 2 books, "The Padded Cell" and "Escape from a Padded Cell" are about how the system needs to change to offer individuals with disabilities better supports. "Escape from a Padded Cell" is an autobiography about how Northrop overcame the problems he discusses in his first book.
Yvona Fast has lived with a disability her entire life, but only knew she was odd and different. In her 40s, she discovered that her quirkiness fits on the high end of the autism spectrum.
Her first book, a career guide for individuals with Asperger Syndrome or Non-Verbal Learning Disability, was a result of her struggles with fitting into the employment world for many years. Fast's latest book, "Garden Gourmet," helps readers create meals using seasonal, local produce. She has also co-authored her mothers' memoir, "My Nine Lives."
Tom Techman is a singer/songwriter who has cerebral palsy. He has performed nationally as a singer and advocate for independence for people with disabilities for more than 20 years. You can hear his "2 cents" Tuesday mornings on WSLP. He sings a diverse repertoire of songs, and has written original material.
A portion of proceeds from book sales will go to support the Tri Lakes Center for Independent Living.
