Adirondack Adventure for wounded warriors in Old Forge

OLD FORGE - About 15 U.S. servicemen and women who were injured in the line of duty after Sept. 11, 2001, will be hosted at the Adirondack League Club in conjunction with the Adaptive Sports Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Adirondack Adventure, set to take place Sept. 5 through 8, will have the wounded warriors participating in four days of outdoor activities common to the Park, such as fly fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, shooting clays and fishing trips to remote lakes only accessible by floatplane.

As a national program provider for Wounded Warrior Project, the Adaptive Sports Foundation is responsible for providing more than 15 physical health and wellness programs a year through their Warriors in Motion program. Building on the ASF's eight-year history of working with wounded warriors, it and Wounded Warrior Project began to offer Warriors in Motion events in 2011. The idea is that, through sports and outdoor activity, these wounded warriors discover how the physical self is tied to the emotional and psychological self.

"I owe a lot to programs like Adaptive Sports Foundation's Warriors in Motion," retired Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Mark Mix said in a press release. "The events made me realize my life was not over and gave me a new outlook on living."

ASF Executive Director Todd Munn said, "We are honored to partner up with the Adirondack League Club and Wounded Warrior Project for this event. The beauty and serenity of the Adirondacks is the perfect environment for our wounded warriors to either discover or rediscover a passion for the outdoors. The ability to turn off the 'chatter' of everyday life to reconnect with oneself and nature is a great way for our wounded warriors to realize their full physical and mental potential post-injury."
