SARANAC LAKE - Village police say a local woman lied about her address in order to continue getting benefits from social services.
Jacqueline E. Snickles, 31, of Saranac Lake, was issued a criminal summons Monday charging her with two felonies: fourth-degree welfare fraud and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing.
Police said Snickles moved her residence from Essex County to Franklin County but failed to notify the Essex County Department of Social Services of her address change and continued to receive services from Essex County. Police also said Snickles filed official paperwork showing her address was in Essex Couny when she was actually living in Franklin County. She allegedly received $1,655 in food stamp benefits she was not entitled to, police said.
Snickles told the Enterprise this morning that she when she moved from the Essex County side of Saranac Lake to the Franklin County side, she thought she was still in Essex County and therefore kept filing for benefits there. She said she is a single mother with two children who works full-time but still needs extra financial help.
"This is just very upsetting because it's all a big misunderstanding," she said.
Snickles was arrested by village police, processed and released on a criminal summons for town of Elizabethtown court.
