Superheroes fly in to save the arts

LAKE PLACID - Normally, your friends might start to worry about you if you dressed up like a superhero.

But tonight, it's more than acceptable, it's encouraged at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts annual summer benefit, Superheroes for the Arts.

LPCA spokeswoman Kim Andresen said she's not sure what anyone will wear, but she anticipates a lot of capes, leotards "and perhaps a thunderbolt or two." One board member who stopped by Wednesday had spent the morning perfecting her and a friend's capes for the benefit, Andresen said.

"I can tell you in past years some people have really, REALLY gotten into the theme," said Andresen, who was still trying to figure out her costume when she emailed the Enterprise Wednesday. "It's a fun break from the summer norm."

Regular evening party attire is acceptable as well, Andresen said.

The main benefit begins at 6 p.m. at the Lake Placid Club Golf House, with a feast including things like Aqua Man tuna tar-tar and Green Lantern asparagus pastries. Tickets for the main part of the benefit may be difficult to come by at the last minute, but interested people can call 518-523-2512 to check if there are any available.

But there's plenty of space at the Krypton Ball Afterparty, which is held in the same place and runs from 9 to 11 p.m. Costumes are encouraged there as well. Tickets are $45 and include music, food, beer and wine.

The annual summer party raises 10 percent of the arts center's operating budget for the year and helps the LPCA present more than 380 programs for over 40,000 patrons.

"Keep the planet spinning safely and the future of the Arts brightly shining!" reads the press release announcing the event.
