SARANAC LAKE - The Saranac Lake Central School District has new tenants for the former Lake Colby Elementary School.
Dan Bower, the district's superintendent for business, said Friday that the Adirondack Arc will be moving its Children's Corner preschool programs from the primary building at St. Bernard's School on River Street, where they've been since 2010, to the Lake Colby School this summer. Children's Corner will use two classrooms in the building, he said.
Essex County Head Start will occupy another classroom, moving from its site on Depot Street. And the Plattsburgh-based Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center will also move its social day program to the school from its current location at the Saranac Lake Adult Center, Bower said.
Details of the leases with all three tenants are currently being finalized. Combined, they will provide the district with $41,000 a year in rent, Bower said.
"For us it's good that the building is full," he said. "We're kind of maximizing the revenue and providing them some space. I think it's kind of a win-win for everybody here."
"I'm tickled that it's not a liability to the district and the taxpayers," said Superintendent Gerald Goldman. "Last year's lease arrangement didn't work out as well as we liked, but I think with multiple tenants we'll be in a little better shape there."
The school had been leased to Tendercare Tot Center until the preschool, day care and after school center closed its operations there in March due to financial difficulties. It had leased the building since July 2011.
The school district used the Lake Colby building for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes until it closed at the end of the 2010-11 school year as part of a cost-cutting move.
