If anyone wants to celebrate a truly American occasion, then one should look no further than Saranac Lake during this coming Memorial Day weekend for all the family wholesomeness these days will offer.
The Capital of the Adirondacks, Saranac Lake, the All-America City, will host a multitude of American and family-friendly events through these glorious three days, May 25 through 27; from baseball to war heroes, Saranac Lake will reflect all that's right with America.
Saranac Lake 6er Weekend
On Saturday, hikers and climbers from around the eastern seaboard and beyond will sign up for the first-ever Saranac Lake 6er Challenge at Berkeley Green and commence their quest of conquering the six peaks surrounding Saranac Lake - many shooting to do them in less than 24 hours and garnering the Ultra 6er honor. You are invited to participate or come out for the 8 a.m. "shotgun" start and cheer the climbers onward.
Starting at 3 in the afternoon, events and entertainment will be had at this downtown park until the first 6er arrives and will go on, no doubt, much later - as each finisher will return to Berkeley Green to ring the 6er Bell. There will be activities for kids and a poetry contest, and Inisheer, the popular Irish band, will play at Berkeley Green from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Downtown merchants are joining the fun, too, by offering six prizes if you visit them and check out their 6er Weekend specials, which is also part of the $25 on the 25th campaign, a statewide effort to promote Main Street merchants, the backbone of the local retail economy.
Walk of Fame
On Sunday, May 26, the Adirondack 46er Club, national climbing enthusiasts and the greater community will gather at St. Bernard's Cemetery at 10 a.m. to honor Adirondack 46er No. 1, Herb Clark, with the laying of a commemorative stone in tribute to his long-lasting accomplishment. Saranac Lake will also unveil its Walk of Fame plaque for Mr. Clark the evening before.
Memorial Day and heroes
On Monday, Saranac Lake will hit its American stride at 10 a.m. as the community will gather at the Veterans' Club on Upper Broadway for the unveiling of the Walk of Fame plaque for World War II hero Rene Joyeuse, followed by the Memorial Day parade to Riverside Park where we shall honor our fallen veterans.
After the Memorial Day Parade, the village will converge upon Rotary Field, off Ampersand Avenue, and cheer the "first pitch" of the Saranac Lake Youth Baseball league at 1 p.m. Those arriving earlier can have fun watching and participating in the Home Run Derby, which starts at noon. Youth baseball games will play through the afternoon.
A time to reconnect with Saranac Lake friends and family
There is plenty of time to gather with family and friends during this long weekend for a traditional barbecue or to go downtown and meet up with old classmates and new friends. The weekend will be a time for coming home and reconnecting.
Saranac Lake keeps sacred its American traditions and its values, and honors those who should be so honored. The village also honors its residents - past and present - and invites them all to share the community warmth we so dearly treasure.
