Loretta (LaValley) Coombs, 96, of Tupper Lake, passed away at Mercy Living Center on May 19, 2013. She was born in Utica and raised in Childwold.
The daughter of Howard and Laura Gale, Mrs. Coombs graduated from Tupper Lake High School and subsequently graduated from Potsdam Normal School. She later received a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Potsdam State University. She was a dedicated elementary school teacher having spent over forty years teaching in various school systems. She retired from the Tupper Lake school system in 1975 with more than 25 years of service.
Mrs. Coombs spent most of her life in Childwold and Tupper Lake. She retired to Clearwater, Fla. in 1980 and in 1999 relocated to Greenville, S.C. In 2009 she returned to Tupper Lake.
She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Laura Gale; her first husband, Ernest LaValley; her second husband, James Coombs; a sister, Janet Mauchly of Canandaigua; and a grandson, Brad Young of Tupper Lake.
Loretta is survived by three loving daughters and their husbands: Gale Young (George) and Joan Thompson (Allen) of Tupper Lake, and June Julian (Joseph) of Greenville, S.C.; as well as seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake at 11 a.m. May 28. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Childwold Presbyterian Church, c/o Ms. Donna Amoroso, Childwold, NY 12922.
