SARANAC LAKE - Hikers will converge in the village on Memorial Day weekend to hike the Saranac Lake 6.

The arts community is stepping up to the challenge, too, and will be holding a special exhibit of 6er Art for the weekend in the former Pink store, 5 Broadway. Located just across the street from Berkeley Green, 6er headquarters, the display will be in the window all weekend and open to the public Saturday afternoon.

In addition to this exhibit, local artists will start a friendly challenge to see who can be the first to display 6 new works of art that represent each of the 6 mountains. After the big 6er Weekend, local art galleries will have 6ers art work for viewing and sale.

The mountains and lakes in this area have always been subject matter for artists, dating back to the early days of settlement in the 1800s. Contemporary artists who live and work in Saranac Lake are also often inspired by the mountains that form so many of our scenic views.

The exhibit is organized by Saranac Lake ArtWorks, whose mission is "promoting and nurturing the arts in the community."Participating artists are painters Tim Fortune, Jacqueline Altman, Meg Bernstein, Matt Burnett, Sandra Hildreth, and Cat Micheels, pastel artist Susan Whiteman, and mixed media artist Cris Winters will have work on display. Also exhibiting are photographers Mark Kurtz, Burdette Parks, and Barry Lobdell,

Viewers are invited to see how different artists use different media and techniques and the same subject matter to create unique works of art. There might be views that include one or more of the mountains, views from one of the 6er mountains, or rocks, trees, birds, or animals in or on those mountains. Maybe even artwork that portrays hikers on the mountains.
