LP runners defend D-II title

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls track and field team locked up its second straight Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, Division II regular season championship Monday with a 74-57 dual meet win over Elizabethtown-Keene-Moriah-Westport.

EKMW won the boys meet 116-13.

Sisters Gabby and Nina Armstrong had another strong day, each picking up four victories on the day. Kendra Manning and Lissy Ashley chipped in two wins apiece.

Gabby Armstrong, an eighth-grader, won the 800-meter race in 2 minutes, 36 seconds and high jump with a 4-foot-6. She was also part of the winning 3,200 relay that crossed the line in 11:42 and the 1,600 relay that finished in 4:36.

Nina Armstrong, a sophomore, won the 400 hurdles in 1:20.1 and the 3,000 in 12:39. She crossed the line at the same time as Ashley in the 1,500 in 5:48. Nina Armstrong was also part of the 3,200 relay that included her sister, Rachael Ashley and Sage Miller.

Manning won the 400 in 1:05.5 and was part of the 1,600 relay along with Jilly Goulette, Lissy Ashley and Gabby Armstrong.

Nzoni Thompson was Lake Placid's only winner in the boys meet after taking the 400 in 56.2.

Saranac Lake 66, Plattsburgh 61

Girls

Plattsburgh 95, Saranac Lake 57

PLATTSBURGH - The Saranac Lake boys track and field team closed out the regular season with a 66-61 victory over Plattsburgh on Monday.

Seniors Alex Beaudoin, Kevin Morgan and Craig Leahy led the way with three victories for the Red Storm. Beaudoin won both sprint races, taking the 100 in 10.9 and the 200 in 23.2. He was joined by Morgan, Leahy and Zane Pelletieri on the winning 1,600 relay team that finished in 3:40.4.

Morgan's two other wins came in the 400 at 53.2 and the long jump with a 19-10 1/2. Leahy took the 110 hurdles in 19.0 and the 400 hurdles in 1:03.1.

On the girls' side, Samantha Martin and Annie Frenette were each three-time winners. Both runners were part of the 1,600 relay team that crossed the line in 4:25 and the 3,200 relay that finished in 11:08.

Martin took first place in the 800 with a time of 2:35.4, while Frenette won the 400 in 1:04.3.

"The girls had many outstanding efforts, but PHS was just too deep," said Saranac Lake coach Peter Frenette.

Chloe Peer set a personal best mark in the 3,000, while Vanessa Salamy and Blair Moody each had busy days after competing in four events.

Saranac Lake will travel back to Plattsburgh on Saturday for the Section VII meet.

SOFTBALL

Lake Placid 6, Moriah 0

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid softball team got a strong pitching performance from Serina Hayes and was flawless in the field Monday on the way to a 6-0 victory over Moriah.

It was the sixth victory in a row for the Blue Bombers, who are 9-5 in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference games and 10-5 overall.

Hayes was on fire Monday, striking out 15 batters without issuing a walk over seven innings of work. She gave up just two hits, a double to Madison Stahl in the in the second inning and a single to Lauren Brace in the seventh.

The Lakc Placid offense built a lead in the meantime, scoring three in the first and single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Taylor Maiorca went 2-for-3 with two singles and Adele Jesmer connected for a double. Kelsey Taylor, Haley Brandes and Hayes each chipped in singles.

Taylor Sprague was tagged with the pitching loss for Moriah after striking out two and walking three over six innings.

Lake Placid will now await the pairings for the sectional tournament, which is expected to open Thursday.

Plattsburgh 5, Saranac Lake 4

PLATTSBURGH - The Plattsburgh softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 5-4 CVAC victory over Saranac Lake on Monday.

Rachel Bedard ended the game with an RBI single to center to cap off the victory.

The Red Storm put themselves in position to win with two runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 advantage.

Megan Kilroy went 3-for-4 with three singles and Sydney Battistoni collected a single, a double and two RBI to lead Saranac Lake, which outhit Plattsburgh 8-6.

The Red Storm fell to 10-5 with the loss, and will hit the road Tuesday for a first-round playoff game against Peru.

BASEBALL

Lake Placid 6, Moriah 1

PORT HENRY - The Lake Placid baseball team won its third game in a row Monday with a 6-1 victory over Moriah.

Blue Bombers ace Ryan Meyer took the mound and lived up to his billing after striking out 10 for the complete-game victory. He helped his own cause at the plate with two triples and a single.

Eddie Kane did his part for Lake Placid with two RBI and a run. Shane McNierney, Kamm Cassidy and Connor Preston also had hits for Lake Placid, which evened its record to 7-7 with the win.

Moriah pitcher Christopher Clarke had three of his team's four hits.

Plattsburgh 14, Saranac Lake 5

SARANAC LAKE - The Plattsburgh baseball team jumped on Saranac Lake early and didn't let up Monday on the way to a 14-5 victory.

It was the final regular season game of the spring for the Red Storm, who will travel to Saranac on Friday for a first-round playoff game against Saranac.

The Hornets led 11-1 after three innings, racking up 10 hits during that time. Saranac Lake posted three runs in the fourth and another in the seventh but it wasn't enough to dent the Plattsburgh advantage.

Grant Strack and Brad Shumway each had three hits, while Dylan Gunther, Trent Fitzgerald and Nicholas McCabe each had two.

Dan Hartman collected four hits for the Hornets, who are 10-10 overall and 9-6 in CVAC games.

Saranac Lake finished the regular season with a 5-10 record.
