To the editor:
I would like to draw the attention of your readers to an organization that has existed in the middle of Saranac Lake for more than 100 years.
It provides reading material for any member of the public - books, magazines, newspapers and reference materials on site, and large-print books, audiobooks and DVDs that can be signed out. This organization also makes it possible for people to download e-books right in the comfort of their own homes. People who visit the building are welcome to use any of five computers, free of charge; they may also bring their own laptop or iPad, make themselves comfortable and make use of our wi-fi service. This organization sponsors Story Hours, a Summer Reading Program, TABOB (Take a Bite Out of Books) for middle schoolers and the Library Lunch series. Book clubs meet on the premises, and other civic groups, such as the Red Cross, make use of the facilities also. The Cantwell Room is one of the performance sites for First Night.
I am speaking, of course, of the Saranac Lake Free Library. The library was first chartered in 1907, and since that time the library has tried to provide many services for the community free of charge. However, these services have to be paid for somehow, and a significant portion of our operating capital comes from our yearly Membership Drive. During this drive, which begins in May, members of the community are invited to support the library by becoming a member at any of three levels: $40, $60 or $120. Larger donations would, of course, be welcome.
Members are recognized as supporters of a vital community organization. They are invited to the Annual Meeting, held the fourth Wednesday of January, and are also welcome to attend the Monday, Aug. 5, Members' Night of the "Come to the Fair" book sale from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Readers who have not been contacted about the annual Membership Drive are invited to contact us. They are welcome to call the library at 518-891-4190 to ask that membership materials be sent to them. They may stop in at the library and sign up as a member. Or this year, for the first time, people may go online and sign up as a member at www.saranaclakelibrary.org. If you have any questions, you can contact any SLFL board member or library Director Peter Benson at 518-891-4190.
We hope to hear from you so that our important work can continue.
President, Board of Trustees
