How can we increase economic growth? By recognizing our assets and shouting from the mountaintops what they are. That's exactly what the village of Saranac Lake is doing with a destination tourism promotion that will peak on Saturday, May 25. The village is celebrating six mountains that surround it: Baker, McKenzie, Haystack, Scarface, Ampersand and St. Regis.
Saranac Lake is encouraging visiting hikers to climb these six peaks as a group, a much more attainable goal than the classic Adirondack 46. Anyone who climbs them all on or after May 25 can apply to the village for certification and receive a patch and bumper sticker proclaiming oneself a "6er."
To liven it up, on top of the regular 6er there are special Ultra 6er badges for climbing the mountains within 24 consecutive hours. There's also a Winter 6er honor for doing it in the most extreme season.
Downtown Saranac Lake has been decorated with 6er banners that look great and are informative, too, telling people the elevation in feet of each of the six summits. Downtown will also have a Sixer Saturday Spring Shopping day with six prizes that shoppers can enter.
That Saturday is also the statewide small business promotion "$25 on the 25th," to encourage everyone to support local shops by spending as little as $25 to boost your hometown economy. If you're looking for mountains of specials before you head off for a hike, make sure you plan ahead to fit it all in.
Visitors and residents will enjoy the festivities, deals and prizes while helping the community grow stronger. So mark your calendar and come to hike, shop, dine and hopefully win a prize in Saranac Lake.
