Tupper tracksters take two events

TUPPER LAKE - Madi Fortier, Samantha Ormsby and Katie Zurek each turned in two first-place finishes Wednesday as the Tupper Lake track and field teams took on Canton and Gouverneur.

Both the Lumberjacks' girls and boys fell in the team scoring.

Fortier, a sophomore, won the 100-meter race after crossing the line in 13.3 seconds. She came back to win the 200 in 27.71.

Tupper Lake swept the jumping events. Ormsby, a senior, won the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 6.25 inches and the triple jump with a 33-2.5. Teammate Hannah Klossner cleared 5-0 to top the high jump field.

Zurek, an eighth-grader, won the shot put with a 34-8 and the discus with a 91-2. Tess Klossner, another eighth-grader, won the 400 in 1:04.51.

Mitchell Harriman and Cody LaPierre each recorded second-place finishes for the Tupper Lake boys team. Harriman was second in the 800 with a 2:30.74, just behind Troy Gates of Gouverneur who crossed the line in 2:28.91. LaPierre was second in the 100 with a 12.65 behind Jose Flores of Gouverneur at 12.31.

GOLF

Lake Placid 4, AuSable Valley 2

AUSABLE FORKS - Miles Lussi and Ryan Kane each shot 42 for the low rounds of the day Wednesday to lead the Lake Placid golf team to a 4-2 victory over AuSable Valley.

Pat Kane and Jay Reid won their matches for the Blue Bombers, with matching scores of 45.

Nate Devins and Ridge Perkett were AuSable Valley's low scorers after shooting 43. Perkett won his match at No. 3 over Lucas Strack who shot a 45.

Kyle Hart picked up a win in the No. 5 spot for the Patriots, beating Bjorn Kroes, who carded a 46.

Lake Placid's regular No. 1 golfer Kiefer Casler missed the match due to sickness.

The Blue Bombers improved to 4-2 with the win and will host Saranac Central on Friday at Craig Wood Golf Course.

Saranac Lake 6, Ticonderoga 0

RAY BROOK -All six members of the Saranac Lake golf shot rounds of 43 or better on their home course in Ray Brook during a 6-0 shutout victory over Ticonderoga Wednesday in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

The Red Storm improved to 4-1 in the league with the win, which was their four straight.

Dustin Fischer took medalist honors with an even-par 36 to win his No. 1 match against the Sentinels Nick Bezon. Fischer had five pars, two birdies and two bogeys in the round.

Ethan Sawyer was the second golfer to shoot in the 30s in the match. Playing in Saranac Lake's top spot, Sawyer carded a two-over par 38 to defeat Jacob Young.

Also for Saranac Lake, Blake Gregory had a 42 to top Karney Manning in the third match, Austin Ecret shot a 42 to defeat Zeshan Afzal at No. 4, Teddy Yanchitis fired a 43 to beat Tyler Jordon in the fifth match and Carley Sawyer fired a 41 to top Adam Geiser in the sixth match.

Manning's 53 was the lowest score for the Sentinels.

Saranac Lake will next play on the road Friday against Peru at the Adirondack Golf Club.

SOFTBALL

Lake Placid 4, Peru 3

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid softball team scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on defensively in the seventh to secure a 4-3 victory over Peru.

Serina Hayes was the pitcher of record for the Blue Bombers, striking out seven and walking just one batter. She helped her own cause at the plate with two singles and two RBI.

Hanna Potter went 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore Taylor Maiorca collected two singles.

Lake Placid led 2-1 after the first inning, before Peru tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth.

AuSable Valley 10, Saranac Lake 1

CLINTONVILLE - The AuSable Valley and Saranac Lake softball teams were only able to get through five innings Wednesday before the rains came and left the Patriots with a 10-1 victory.

It was the second loss in two days for the Red Storm, who now have an 8-3 record. First-place Saranac also suffered a defeat Wednesday, falling 7-4 to Ticonderoga for their second league loss of the season.

Saranac Lake was only able to muster two hits Wednesday as Megan Moody and Brittany Tschirhart each singled. Tschirhart also took the loss as after pitching four innings.

Logan Snow, Madison Rondeau and Miranda Sheffer had two hits apiece for AuSable Valley, which improved to 6-4 with the victory.
