LAKE PLACID - The Saranac Lake boys lacrosse team achieved one of its preseason goals on Monday with an 11-4 victory over Colton-Pierrepont at the North Elba athletic fields in Lake Placid.
The Red Storm won just two games in 2012, and Monday's triumph gave them one more victory than a season ago, which was what head coach Dermott Morgan hoped for heading into this spring's schedule.
Two seniors helped pave the way for the win at opposite ends of the field, as Seth Pickreign poured in six goals and Mike Burpoe had a solid game in nets with 15 saves. The game marked the first time in the past two seasons that Saranac Lake reached double figures in goals scored.

"One of our objectives this season was getting at least one more win that we did last year, and we still have four games left," Morgan said. "We have the potential to win any of those games. We put together a solid game today."
Saranac Lake surged out to a 5-0 lead in the first half before the Colts managed to get on the board. The Red Storm extended their advantage to 11-1 with Colton netting three goals in the final quarter.
Jeff Stevens and Oliver Holmes chipped in two goals each for Saranac Lake, and junior long pole Jim Murnane rounded out the scoring with the first goal of his varsity career. Quinn Urquhart and Gabe Woodward added an assist apiece in the win.
"Seth was unstoppable today," Morgan said. "We have guys who like to force their way in close to the net, and that's not how it's done. Seth went by the first defender and shot. He was scoring from 12, 15 feet out, and he's got a deadly underhand shot."
Monday's win gave Saranac Lake a season sweep of the Colts that included a 9-6 win on April 18 in Colton. In those two matches, Pickreign accounted for 11 of the 20 goals scored by Saranac Lake and he also totaled four assists.
Colton-Pierrepont was led by Cody Green, who scored two goals and added a pair of assists. Also for the Colts, Andrew Holden scored once and set up two goals, Jake Angleberger notched a goal, Scott Boyce chipped in one assist and Craig Miller made 12 saves in nets.
"Although Seth did most of our scoring, we were pretty well balanced on offense," Morgan said. "I told our guys that ground balls win games, and today we were committed to getting the ground balls."
The loss was the 11th of the season for the winless Colts, who had just three substitutes for the game.
"Colton can't score a lot of goals, but defensively they are hard to score on because they get back quick and play a tough zone defense," Morgan said. "At this point, they are just struggling to keep a program together. It's a small school. Heuvelton dropped their boys lacrosse last year, and next year, it could be Colton. I hope that isn't the case."
Saranac Lake has two more games on tap this week, starting with Thursday's matchup against Canton, which will also be played in Lake Placid and is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Red Storm wraps up the week Saturday at Schroeter's Field against non-league rival Northwood, with the opening faceoff set for 10 a.m.
