‘Provence en Plein Air’ opens Sunday

May 2, 2013
Adirondack Daily Enterprise

SARANAC LAKE - During the month of May, Cris Winters will exhibit artwork made during two weeks in Provence at the Left Bank Cafe.

An opening reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The first week of the Provence trip, Winters participated in a watercolor painting workshop with Diane Hoff-Rome in Var Province, about one hour east of Marseilles.

Hoff-Rome's painting method was extremely loose and somewhat abstract, using watercolor pencil for basic drawing followed with loads of water and color. This is the style that was used in nearly all the paintings in the show and still influences Cris' watercolor work.

Winters' travels alone during the second week to three cities - Aix en Provence, Avignon and Saints Maries de la Mer in the Camargue - provided plenty of opportunities for practicing her French and for painting whatever presented itself.

In addition to the paintings and drawings she completed, Winters kept track of her experiences in journals that included daily written narratives, drawings, and collected materials.
